The home run ball Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber hit on top of the right field scoreboard will go up for auction.
Half of the proceeds will go to the Cubs Care charity and the other half to the Cubs operational fund.
Initial bidding will begin at $15,000 and is expected to reach $100,000.
The ball was recently removed from the scoreboard after it was encased in plexiglass for the Cubs 2015 postseason run. It is now in a secret location as it prepares for the action being held during the yearly Cubs Caravan convention. The convention is a tradition where the players and fans interact as they begin to get ready for the upcoming season.
After a remarkable 97 win season in 2015, expectations are extremely high for 2016 and anything less then making the playoffs will be a huge disappointment. With the additions of Jason Heyward, John Lackey, and Ben Zobrist, the Cubs seem to have upgraded their lineup and rotation. But you never know in baseball.
Cubs president Theo Epstein told CSN Chicago, “Let’s hope more home runs land on the scoreboard so we can have more auctions. It will also be a nice indicator that we are winning some games.”
